Prime Minister Champions Apprenticeship Scheme

 Prime Minister David Cameron has today announced a new scheme which aims to produce an additional 100,000 engineering technicians by 2018.The multi-million pound initiative is a national drive to encourage young people to sign up to an engineering apprenticeship. This will create a whole new generation of engineering technicians, giving them structured on-the-job training built upon a recognised academic qualification.

EU Referendum News

David Cameron has promised an in or out referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union if the Conservatives win the next election.After months of tantric teasing, the prime minister used a speech in central London early on Wednesday morning to set out his vision to claw back powers from Brussels to Westminster and then put the new relationship to a public vote by October 2017.In what could be one of the defining speeches of his time in Downing Street, the prime minister said: "It is time for the British people to have their say, it is time for us to settle this question about Britain and Europe".

The Stage & Theatre Trust back ABC Campaign

An article in the Stage Newspaper (17/1/13) backs the campaign to rethink the development of this historic building to refelct its long history. Mhora Samuel, director of national theatre advisary body the Theatres Trust, said: "The council needs to come up with a stronger, clearer vision about the future of the current building...before it progresses with any action which might involve demolition..."

Campaign to Save the ABC Theatre

The Labour run council wants to demolsih the ABC Theatre - which started life as the Empire Theatre, then the Hippodrome Theatre, more than 100 years ago. It is another of Blackpool's historic and heritage buildings, like the neighbouring Regent Cinema, that needs to be saved and not reduced to rubble. The ABC Theatre could be the base for a new Variety and Illuminations Museum celebrating the resorts rich entertainment history and also have a performance venue and perhaps even a small cinema venue for showing classic films for educational & entertainment purposes; perhaps with links to the BFI in London. This would also provide a research and heritage centre for students and academics from across the UK and beyond.

EU budget: David Cameron says no cut to UK rebate

David Cameron has told EU leaders there can be "no question" of any further cuts to the British budget rebate. And he told EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy there should be cuts in EU spending as a "symbolic gesture". Mr Cameron, who is holding talks in Brussels ahead of a meeting of all 27 member states, has vowed to resist any increase in the EU's long-term budget.

Red Tape Cut Will Boost Blackpool Businesses

From 1 October 2012, thousands of small businesses and venues that host live music events will be freed from the burdens of unnecessary red tape. This is positive news for Blackpool and will encourage small businesses in the town. Cutting red tape in this and other areas will be a huge relief to many businesses in this difficult time.The reforms are part of a wider strategy to cut red tape, including the Red Tape Challenge, which invited the public, business and the voluntary sector to give their views on which regulations should stay, be improved, or be scrapped altogether.
